THE HISTORY

John Boyle O’Reilly himself was a Fenian exile sent to Western Australia, imprisoned at Fremantle before making a daring escape to America in 1869. Once free, O’Reilly became a key voice in rallying international support for the remaining Fenian prisoners, helping inspire and fund the rescue effort that would eventually bring six men to freedom aboard the Catalpa. His courage, writing, and advocacy helped turn a local injustice into a global cause, making his name forever linked to one of the most extraordinary rescue missions in Irish-Australian history.
